I watched this video on repeat for years. I still have the VHS version of it sitting in my garage. The Shorty’s people should re-release this on Blu Ray.

I had this Black Panther sticker on my car for years. Brings back memories.

Clyde Barrow

There’s something about American Outlaw’s. Clyde Barrow, the famous outlaw that was chased all over the U.S. with his partner Bonnie Parker. They say he was able to stay on the run so long because he had an automatic rifle. Most of the lawmen that tried to capture them were local police. At the time they had to buy their own guns so most of them had small hand guns. Anything they could get for cheap.

If Clyde were around now he wouldn’t even have the chance to stay out of jail long enough to become a public enemy. He’d probably be a hacker!

Random. Maybe I’m looking into this too much.

I’m all about people promoting their businesses. I was in a gas station recently and noticed this sign. Um. Yes, this is a real sign and it isn’t a joke. I guess I can’t knock them for having a clean bathroom…but a giant sign. I love it. If I’m ever in the area again and need to go to the bathroom I know just the place.

I went to college at UMASS, Amherst. A buddy just sent me this video. So much happens so fast after college. It’s nice to take a minute and remember the few years of chaos. Then I realize it’s over and get pissed! Here is a Empire State of Mind remake for all the Zoo Mass Alums. It brought me back.

This works for me. I saw a version of the the Long Beach Dub All Stars at the House of Blues in San Diego a few years a ago. Eric Wilson looked bored. Hopefully Rome gives something him to be stoked about again. Definitely a fan.

Kalel takes a minute with the illustrator/artist Craig “Wotto” Watkins to dig into the rest of what makes Wotto Tick.

AB: I’ve read a few interviews you’ve had and they usually focus on Tees and art. Probably because you are really well known for your graphic art. Let’s do a little something different for the people reading this that know your work.

AB: Where are you from?
WOTTO: I am originally from the Birmingham area, England. I have however moved around a lot and am right now in the middle of another move to L.A next month to be with my wife.

AB: Are you right handed or left handed?
Wotto: Right

AB: What’s your favorite sport to play?
Wotto: I love down hill mountain biking but after breaking both my wrists I have a little fear that makes it hard to ride as well as I used to. Also I am older and chubbier. I like basketball and I played a little bit of rugby when I was younger, both great sports.

AB: What’s your favorite sport to watch on tv?
Wotto: I like rugby but when I move to the states I want to go and watch some different sports. I hear baseball is as much about drinking beer as it is watching so I might give that a whirl.

AB: What was your favorite band in high school?
Wotto: Hummm that’s a tricky question, my memory is cloudy. I liked a lot of local bands but I have to admit to loving Guns n’ Roses as a young pup.

AB: What’s your favorite band today?
Wotto: Too many to list but I really like a band called Morning Runner who I feel are massively under appreciated. I can listen to their whole album over and over again.

AB: What’s your ideal footwear. Sneakers, sandals, or barefoot?
Wotto: Converse Allstars are my favorite, the more battered the better.

AB: Do you remember who gave you the nickname Wotto? If so, who and when?
Wotto: One of my best friends Woody gave me the nickname when I lived in London and I am really glad he did. It is often mistaken for ‘Watto’ but he was that fat ugly guy in Star Wars…wait a minute.

AB: What’s your favorite thing to do besides drawing?
Wotto: Movies, I love a good movie.

AB: What’s your favorite city on earth?
Wotto: Luckily I have traveled quite a bit and I have a few places I love, L.A, Amsterdam, London, Edinburgh and most of O.C.

AB: What’s the last vacation you went on that was longer than a weekend?
Wotto: I have been going back and forth to L.A for about two years to see my now wife and I guess that could be called a vacation. I am a bit of a workaholic so I am not one to lay on a beach for two weeks.

AB: If you weren’t an artist what would be your next favorite career choice?
Wotto: I always quite liked the idea of being a chef and I’d love to be in a band but I can’t play an instrument and I can’t sing in a way that people would want to hear.

AB: Favorite fast food chain?
Wotto: In n’ Out is delicious.

AB: If you were stranded on an island for the rest of your life and could only bring three things what would they be?
Wotto: My wife, my sketchbook and a few pencils.

AB: To finish it off. One art question. When did you realize that t shirts would be a major medium for your art?
Wotto: I submitted a design to Threadless way back in 2007 and I never expected to win but I did enjoy the feedback and the community spirit. Other artists there totally pushed me and soon I was submitting regularly. Then out of the blue, I won! I realized then that T-shirt design fitted my style pretty well.

AB: Lastly. Kalel Apparel. Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Kalel Launches Volume System

Kalel Launches Volume System to help customers better understand the fit of the shirts prior to order.

Until we figure out how to let people try clothes on in our online store we are going to have to do the best we can to describe the products for you. We are adding product photos with people in them to help you gauge the fit as well. In the meantime we are restructuring our products in Volume categories based on fit and shirt type.

KV: “Kalel Volume”

KV 3.0 | Body Width: S=18″, M=20″, L=22″, XL=24″

Kalel Volume 3.0 is what the majority of our shirts are. They are printed on sweatshop free American Apparel shirts. They are 100% cotton fitted shirts. All shirts are screen printed.

KV 2.0

This is a custom shirt that we had made for two shirts. The Ornate Tee and the Motel Tee. They were custom died and cut. The shirts are very soft and lightweight. These are our lightest weight shirts. These are great to just relax in. True comfort shirts.

KV 1.0 | Body Width: S=18″, M=20″, L=22″, XL=24″

This is a 5.5 oz. 100% cotton tubular jersey. American Apparel is 4.5 oz so these are slightly heavier. The shirts have a double needle bottom hem and sleeves. Shoulder to shoulder tape and are pre-shrunk. These shirts will last forever and fit great. The ink and the shirt can withstand 100’s of washes. All Kalel KV 1.0 shirts are screen printed with standard ink.

Contemporary Art Museum? Contemporary-Yes. Art-Maybe.

Have you ever been to a modern art museum and read some of the art descriptions or over heard people interpreting an exhibit?

All I have to say is…”Give…Me…A…Break.”

I went to the Boston Contemporary Art Museum. Some of the displays were really cool. Like this cube made of needles that is held together by friction. That’s cool.

Most of the exhibits were ridiculous. It was a room full of “anyone can do’s”. Some of the descriptions made me think I was taking crazy pills. So I have decided to scrap all my product descriptions and fill them with movie quotes, random quotes, jokes, and weird facts as a tribute to the museum’s insanity.

The product descriptions have nothing to do with designs but at least they will make you laugh, remember and awesome movie you haven’t seen in a while, or teach you something. Just like the super-serious descriptions of life and human emotion next to a picture of a cabinet or a recount of society next to a log on a string have nothing to do with other. I guess the Kalel online store is now an art museum.
